The Beacon Initiatives

For 2009 and 2010, BEACON has selected eight initiatives based on the significant impact improvements will have on patients’ lives. Participating hospitals will set goals and track improvement on selected initiatives.

BEACON has selected two initiatives that will be pursued BEACON-wide by all participating hospitals, falls and sepsis. Each hospital will choose at least two additional patient safety initiatives to track improvement from a menu of offerings. These initiatives include: hospital acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU), stroke mortality, acute myocardial infarction mortality (AMI), C. dificile associated disease (CDAD), catheter associated urinary tract infections (CA-UTI) and perinatal improvement by reducing birth trauma. Hospitals will continue to submit data for 2008 initiatives, VAP and CL/BSI.

Through their participation in these improvement initiatives, organizations will have tremendous opportunity to prevent patient injury and save lives.

To assist hospitals in achieving their goals for improvement, BEACON offers opportunities for peer-to-peer knowledge exchanges at quarterly meetings, leadership and learning forums, access to best practice models, national experts and web-based resources. Improvement data will be tracked for hospital specific progress and performance comparison reports through Q2, 2010.
