About the Beacon Collaborative

What are the benefits for my organization from BEACON data submission?
Data submission, when required, is part of a hospital’s commitment to the BEACON Collaborative. The amount of data from existing sources is optimized to reduce the burden on hospitals. Based on the level of participation (Silver, Gold or Platinum) hospitals may be required to submit a minimum amount of additional data, limited to only essential information to determine improvement and usually already collected by hospitals. By fulfilling your data submission requirement your organization is entitled to the benefits of the collaborative at no charge.

To enhance the BEACON experience and add value to participation, the new BEACON website will provide an automatic feedback report that will graphically show your hospital’s performance overtime once you submit data. You will also have access to a BEACON comparison report so you will know how your organization is performing relative to the other hospitals within the collaborative as well as the benchmark.

How is BEACON funded?
BEACON is funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, which is dedicated to “advancing environmental conservation and cutting-edge scientific research around the world, as well as helping to improve quality of lie in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

In April 2007, the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California received a Phase 2 grant of $1.952 million from the Moore Foundation to continue the work of the Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative, which had started in 2005 for the purpose of supporting the national “100,000 Lives Campaign.”

What is BEACON’s mission?
The purpose of the collaborative is to improve the quality of acute healthcare and end inadvertent harm to patients of the San Francisco Bay Area by accelerating the implementation of high impact, evidence-based clinical and operational practices in hospitals utilizing a dedicated peer-to-peer learning community that produces credible clinical outcome data and models of success.
