Center

Why did you choose a nursing career?
From an early age when I was very interested in
psychology and wanted to work in the field of mental health, I felt that
education in the biophysical sciences would give me a broader understanding
about what makes human beings tick. By becoming a nurse, I entered a profession
that is truly holistic. I have worked as a psychiatric nurse for nearly 20
years; it's a rewarding field that enables me to have a daily, immediate positive
impact on those I care for.
What excites you about quality-related work?
Quality-related work is a way to enhance my own
practice and that of my colleagues as we strive towards
improved outcomes for our patients.
Who inspires you?
I'm inspired by colleagues who demonstrate their
capabilities and passions in projects that matter to them. Their enthusiasm is
contagious!
Did you have a mentor?
The Magnet Coordinator at Santa Clara Valley
Medical Center, Alice Naqvi-Mugler, is the closest I can come in describing a
person who is a real inspiration to me in my work on our hospital's Magnet
project. She is so energetic, always upbeat regardless of the obstacles
we might face. It is amazing how she can put a positive "spin"
on almost any situation! She is a delightful person and has so much
insight into people, in general, and the particular project we are involved
in. She is a role model of hope, enthusiasm, and professionalism.
What BEACON activities have you participated in?
Compass
Series and "Hop on the Bus, Gus: Myths and Mysteries of Engagement"
How has BEACON Collaborative influenced your
work?
The concept of "quality" was rather nebulous to me
until I began attending BEACON functions.
I've learned methods and tools to help improve quality in my
organization; I've also gained access to a larger network of colleagues who can
share a wide range of great ideas for quality improvement. BEACON staff and
seminars have enlivened the subject so that I want to involve myself in more
quality projects.
One wish to change the healthcare system?
For all Americans to enjoy health care as a
right, not a privilege
